Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
-
Yes! It's entirely possible to start learning piano as an adult, even if you've never played an instrument before. The key is to find an approach that suits your interests, experience and available practice time.
In my one-to-one piano lessons, I work with beginners at their own pace, helping them develop their technique, musical understanding and confidence. We can explore the music you enjoy, rather than following a rigid programme that may not suit you. Often I find adults are quick learners as they have life skills and a different level of motivation that really pushes them forward.
You don't need to be naturally gifted or have a musical background to begin. Curiosity and a willingness to learn are a great starting point.
I offer online piano lessons via Zoom, so you can learn from home, wherever you are in the world, as well as in-person lessons in the Forest Row area, East Sussex.

If you learned piano years ago but haven't played for a long time, you may be surprised by how much you remember. Your technique might need rebuilding, and reading music may feel rusty, but you won't necessarily be starting from scratch.
The best approach is to assess where you are now and identify what you'd like to achieve. You might want to revisit pieces you played in the past, develop your technique, learn new music or simply rediscover the enjoyment of playing.
My lessons are tailored to each student's experience and interests. We can work at a comfortable pace, building confidence and musical ability without assuming that you need to follow the same path as a complete beginner.
In my experience of teaching “re-starters” I’ve found progress is exponential, as in learning gets faster as time goes on. This is usually because the student has a foundation of the basics and builds on that.
Lessons & Musical Interests
-
Absolutely. Learning music you love can be a wonderful way to develop your piano playing.
Although classical music is an important part of piano education, it isn't the only route to becoming a confident musician. You might want to play songs by The Beatles, ABBA, Adele or Coldplay, explore the music of contemporary composers, or learn pieces you've always wanted to play.
In my lessons, we can use your musical interests as a starting point while developing the technique and understanding you need to progress. Depending on your goals, we can also explore chords, harmony, improvisation and playing by ear.
The aim is to help you become a more confident musician while enjoying the music that inspires you.

Online piano lessons can be a suprisingly effective way to learn, particularly when they are taught live on a one-to-one basis and tailored to your individual needs.
Through Zoom, we can work on technique, musical interpretation, repertoire and practice strategies while discussing your progress and setting goals for future lessons.
One advantage of online tuition is flexibility: you can learn from home without travelling to a teacher. It also means you can work with a teacher whose musical experience and teaching approach suit you, even if they don't live nearby.
You don't need a complicated technical setup. A piano or keyboard, a computer or tablet, and a reliable internet connection are the essential starting points.

Developing Your Musical Skills
-
Yes. Piano can be a wonderful starting point for exploring songwriting, improvisation and composition.
You don't have to be an advanced pianist to begin experimenting with your own musical ideas. Simple chords, melodies and rhythmic patterns can provide the foundations for creating original music.
Depending on your interests and experience, lessons can explore how chords work together, how to develop a melody, how to accompany a song, or how to improvise at the keyboard.
As a composer, songwriter and performing musician, I can draw on my own musical experience to help you develop these skills. We can build on the music you already enjoy and gradually explore ways to express your own ideas.

Choosing a piano teacher is about more than finding someone who can play well. It's important to find a teacher whose approach, musical interests and way of explaining things work for you.
Think about what you'd like to achieve. Do you want to learn to read music, improve your technique, play your favourite songs, develop your improvisation skills, play music with others or explore songwriting?
It is also worth considering whether you prefer a structured programme or a more flexible approach that adapts to your interests as you progress.
My one-to-one lessons are tailored to each student's experience and musical goals. As a professional musician, composer and songwriter, I can bring a broad range of musical experience into the lessons.
If you're unsure whether my approach would suit you, you're welcome to get in touch to discuss what you'd like to learn and arrange a single lesson.
